Learn Urdu conversation: a starting plan for English speakers

Start with the person you are speaking to

Glottie's Urdu target is contemporary Pakistani Urdu. Begin with an introduction or an everyday social exchange, and give the tutor a setting: meeting someone, talking with family, or asking for help. Practise an appropriate greeting, a reply, and a follow-up rather than a list of isolated words.

When a form of address is unfamiliar, ask how it fits the relationship and situation. Then use it in the same exchange. This keeps explanations attached to something you are actually trying to say.

Let audio and script support each other

Urdu uses the Perso-Arabic script. The University of Texas Urdu guide explains that letter connections and omitted short-vowel markers can make reading challenging for beginners. A written word alone may not give a new learner all the pronunciation information they need.

Listen first, try a short reply, and use a pronunciation reference when studying the spelling afterwards. If you already understand family conversation, practise answering in Urdu before reaching for an English translation. If you are new to both script and speech, keep the first exchange short enough to remember its meaning.

Make familiar phrases usable in a new situation

Repeat a conversation with one detail changed: introduce a different person, ask about a different day, or give another reason for a request. If the change leaves you stuck, return to that small part and try the exchange again. Familiarity with the first version does not automatically mean the new one is easy.
