01
Natural conversation is a shared ambition
Speak announced GPT-Live-1-powered Live Tutor Lessons on September 10, 2026, beginning with a limited rollout for English and Spanish learners. OpenAI names Speak in its launch announcement. Both products are building on a new generation of natural voice technology. [2] [3]
Glottie combines the voice with a starting curriculum reference, learner-shared goals, recent learning context, and a tutor that can vary its explanations and challenge during the conversation. If you are preparing for a client meeting, the useful experience is being able to explain a problem, ask for help with a phrase, and then try a harder follow-up. Speak also documents personalized teaching; compare how each experience handles the work you actually need to do. [5]
02
Check your actual language pair first
An app's interface languages are not its teaching languages. Speak's July 2026 course list includes six non-English targets for English speakers. European Portuguese and Cantonese are absent from that list; a Portuguese or Traditional Chinese interface does not establish a course teaching either one. [6]
In Glottie, check both the language variety you want to speak and the language you want explanations in. That practical fit can matter more than a broad feature checklist. Course availability and the newest tutor experience are separate questions, so verify both before subscribing. [2]
03
Try the same speaking task in both apps
Pick a task you genuinely need: explaining your work, ordering dinner, or discussing tomorrow's plans. Use the same language and approximate level. Ask for a simpler explanation, pause while finding a word, and request another example. Notice whether the help gets you speaking again and whether you understand the next step.
Return another day and check what the app asks you to recall. Compare the experience available in your actual course and plan. Speak documents hands-free options in some lesson types, so include screen interactions in your trial: can you follow the explanation and complete the next step while concentrating on the conversation? [8] [4]
Before you choose.
Does Speak personalize its lessons?
Yes. Its Made For You lessons include practice based on mistakes and interests. Access and limits vary by feature and subscription tier. Look at how that support fits the sessions you expect to use. [5] [4]
Does every Speak lesson use GPT-Live-1?
That is not what its announcement says. Speak describes a limited initial rollout of Live Tutor Lessons for English and Spanish learners. Check availability in your account and course. [2]
